5 Ways to Improve Clinical Communication and Workflow

The study findings highlight that while the promise for a fully integrated communications suite exists, few organizations have successfully achieved this goal. In fact, it seems the vast majority of clinicians, informaticists and IT want to see strong integration of workflow and communications capabilities within a unified application, but past solutions were limited.

The study has some interesting insights both into how organization have or plan to, approach this need as well revealing key gaps and challenges. Below are five takeaways from the survey to consider if you are looking to improve your mobile clinical communications.

  1. Integrate communications and workflow. While the drivers for selecting particular mobile solutions may vary by stakeholders, in common is a need for a solution that integrates patient context, alerts, critical lab results, telemetry and other workflow data with a secure voice and text solution for improved patient care and faster response times with care team members and patients. This the promise of a unified smartphone-based solution and is foundational for providers moving forward.
  2. Measure success. Understand your goals and intended outcomes. 67 percent of IT respondents report they have primary responsibility for clinical communications, with clinicians and informaticists collectively owning ROI only 7 percent of the time. 23 percent of IT respondents weren’t sure who owned outcomes. Know whose success you are measuring and how it will be baselined and measured. Include all key stakeholders.
  3. Celebrate WiFi progress. As a key enabler of smartphone technology, Wi-Fi is key. More than 78% of the informatics staff and more than 60% of clinicians rated wi-fi experience neutral to excellent. So recent infrastructure investments are yielding return, but more work is ahead to support expanding smartphone deployments.
  4. Understand single-purpose secured texting’s limitations. Almost 60 percent of informatics respondents indicated unsecure text messaging is still in use. And, 39 percent said unsecure messaging is happening even when secure messaging options are in place ― a sign current solutions aren’t meeting clinicians’ needs. Only IT roles reported a low incidence (less than 10 percent) of the unsanctioned practice. Switching to secure communication devices with an integrated workflow is a cost-effective and prudent solution.
  5. Select a unified solution. The survey shows a great deal of fragmentation among communications modalities and technologies amid myriad clinical user groups. Clinical and IT stakeholders report the same general distribution of device adoption and usage. The average clinician user profile uses more than three different devices and modalities for communication. Given the challenge of such fragmentation, more than half of the surveyed organizations plan on moving towards a smartphone-based platform that can reduce such fragmentation and provide additional capabilities to integrate both workflow and communications into a single app.
